High School Musicals: the Proving Grounds
from:
Each of us, at one time or another has dreamed of being famous.
We all have glanced up at the silver screen of the cinema and wondered what life would be like as an actor or an actress.
We act all the time, don’t we? We show the world a façade of our feelings, trying what role is best to fit into the world around us.
However, our daily-basis acting doesn’t quite cut it when it comes to becoming a professional, at least not all of us.
However, there are selected few that have been graced with the talent to become professional actors, whether on stage, in the television, or the silver screen, acting has become the epitome of their being.
However, most professional actors have started their careers in little school productions, mostly high school musicals.
High school musicals need, but do not often get, two talents: acting and singing.
What drives the faculty to produce High school musicals instead of other genre of the play may be a permanent mystery. But we can divine a few hints about it.
As said before, these productions develop both acting and singing, which are often the tickets of a person to at least fifteen minutes of fame.
And at least fifteen minutes of fame for a student can mean fifteen minutes of fame for the whole school.
Sad to say, students who star in high school musicals, and whose dreams of stardom are fueled by these productions, very often end up as low-level employees in the cities where they thought their dreams would be fulfilled.
Much like in the movie, Spiderman, the ones who dream of becoming actresses, would have to get a job as waitresses before their luck comes around, if it ever does.
Others, content with small audiences, often end up as starving artists, living for the pursuit of perfection, yet wanting of food.
A high school musical, however, produces some very real talent.
Some of the stars of their high school musicals have gone on to Broadway, others have been discovered by talent scouts for their voice, and still others have become famous for their acting skills.
Another advantage of musicals over other genre is that a musical tend to get the people who watch them more involved.
And we all know that if there is one thing high school students need, it is to get more involved.
Especially if it is a group of high school students in a closed gym we are talking about here.
A musical also offers more opportunities for the faculty to get more involved with the production.
A musical would require props, the proper music, artworks, acting coaches, and fundraisers.
And although reality may seem otherwise, teachers do want to get more involved in school productions.
It does help their credibility, after all.
For the actors, the high school musical presents many opportunities.
Even if they do not go on to become successful actors, they would still remember the first time they actually kissed their admired ones in the play.
Still other students begin to take notice of the others within the circle of actors in the musical and romantic entanglements ensue (think of “A Walk to Remember”).
The important fact is that high school musicals may seem like a façade, but very often they have very real effects on the people involved.
And…cut, that’s a wrap.
