All of us spend our lives looking for something.
We all need something to look for in order to drive our daily existence.
What each person is looking for is unique to him/her. Some may find see what others hold important enough to look for as trivial.
As each person is unique, each of our desire is also different from each other’s.
And though some of us may even think to ourselves that our quests may be in vain, still the search goes on.
And in order to find what we are looking for, we do many, many things.
Some of the things people do in order to find our goals may seem bordering on the ridiculous to others, but to the ones involved, everything is a very serious matter.
But what are we all really looking for? There is only one answer to this question and that is happiness.
Everything that man is searching for is, one way or another, what he thinks will make him happy.
The quest for happiness has dogged each man from the day he is born. And most people die without even getting close to solving that quest.
In the song “what I’ve been looking for”, this quest is discussed. People have often searched far and wide for whatever they think would make them happy, only to come home disappointed and heartbroken.
But often in stories, those who travel far only needed to look beside them in order to find what was missing from their lives.
Some people tend to take things that are near them for granted. They tend to see the world as a “the grass is always greener on the other side” type of place.
But the paradox is that there is actually no other side. We are all living in one plane, separated by a fence. If you go deeper and farther into what you think is your side, you will find out that you will have arrived at what you call the other side… and the view is just the same.
But in your journey from that side to this you will realize that the world is a beautiful place after all… and then you will be happy.
In the song, it discusses the feeling of being alone.
Most of us go through the journey of life, feeling that we are alone and that no one understands us.
We continually run forward, waiting to bump into someone and trying to convince them to join us.
What we often do not realize is that if we just look beside us, someone will be there; ready to join us going in the same direction.
Love, after all, is not bumping into each other but going in the same direction together.
What we need to look for is someone who can understand.
As the song says, we need someone who knows who we really are.
We go through our lives wearing masks, always afraid to offend anyone. But with that person, we can do what we want, and show ourselves and he/she will be able to understand.
With that person, you need not be afraid of removing your mask and stopping your façade, for you will be loved because of who you are.
The same as in the song, you never really need to look very far.
