Parka Goose Down and Some Tips on Parka Care

Only in the last half of the 21st century did man discovered synthetic materials that will provide him ideal insulation. These he used for filling his bed to padding his clothes. Again, just to keep him warm. Insulation helps keep your body warm by trapping in the warmth that a material may absorb. Though technological advancements undergone great lengths to create something that will provide man his needed insulation, they still failed to produce fabrics that would surpass the quality that a natural material possesses- the goose down.
This special characteristic can be attributed to the tiny hairs found in each cluster of the down which give it the capacity to trap in absorbed heat. Nothing man made has yet gained that attribute.
Additionally, goose down do not create odor at all, especially when dry.
However, one of the biggest advantage that man made materials have over goose down is that they would still keep you warm even when wet. On the other end of the scale, goose down must be protected properly from external and internal elements. The good thing though is that goose down don't easily get wet. But with proper care, you can expect that your goose down item would live longer than you can.
Parka, a fashion trend that is fastly emerging into the scene these days is typically made from goose down. While it is popular as a garment for fashion enthusiasts, they were once exclusive only among polar explorers and mountain climbers. Goose down parka then is often an issue between life and death among these people, thus the great importance given to them.
One-piece insulation, a primary characteristic of goose down parka, posses a greater warmth-to-weight ratio when compared with a layering system that is found in other polar garments. Thus, with the aid of goose down (a very ideal material for insulation by the way), mountaineers can have the warmth they need while providing them with freer movement.
Leakage
While no one can actually separate down from feather, there are still ways to prevent too high feather content. So that means that even the high-end goose downs contain relatively small amounts of feather in them. The problem comes here. Because feathers have sharp quills they tend to penetrate the fabric that covers them. Again, there is no single fabric that can keep them from protruding over time. Thus, leaking is possible.
Some goose down parkas leak more than others due to the variation of feather-down mixture. As with many other garments, the best solution to a leaked goose down parka is to cover the section before it gets worse. However, no one should worry about the effect of such leak on the over-all quality of the goose down parka filler.
Leaks rarely affect loft. Usually, a feather or two would be seen protruding from the damaged section of the parka. But that really is not much of a big deal in terms of insulation value.
Storage
Goose down parka can be partially compressed when stored. However, beware of condensation since it might result to mildew. It is best that you store your goose down parka in a location that has a constant and ideal temperature for storage. Also, never expose goose down parka to sunlight when not for the purpose of drying. You can have your parka hung in the closet or stored loosely in a cotton storage sack.
