Tips for Cleaning Goose Down Pillows
from:Snug down to comfort. And experience a night filled with luxury.
If there are a few things that you would want for a sleep tonight, that might be a good pillow, a warm blanket and a nice comforter. How then would you expect not to sleep the cool night away?
Because goose down is naturally excellent in securing heat while providing you with much desired fluffiness, they are primarily used in making comforters, beds, pillows and blankets. However, their uses extend to being ideal for winter clothing and as sleeping bags.
Goose down has gained extreme recognition in providing comfort in one hand and style in another. Although there had been established materials used in making blankets, pillows and comforters such as wool and synthetic cotton, nothing would surpass the benefits that may be had from those that are made from goose down.
We may give credit to the goose down's capacity to provide you with a dry sleep. During the night, we loose around one liter of water from our body. If we use synthetic materials, they would only trap the moisture and leave them in that dormant state. Thus, making us feel a bit unpleasant and hot. However, for goose down, this moisture is absorbed and is allowed to evaporate. Leaving your goose down item with fresh, pure state. However, in time one would need to clean his downs.
To avoid frequent visits to dry cleaning shops, you may cover your goose down item with protective duvet.
There is nothing better for your goose down but a professional cleaning. Too few people would tell you that they have successfully cleaned items made from goose down. Which is very dangerous by the way.
Down comforters and blankets are too big for your home washers. Home washing may rip off the covering of the blanket or the pillow, which in turn may get trapped in the water exhaust. This can either damage your washer or will result to flooding in your laundry room. Be especially keen at this when you would want to make attempts on your old pillows or comforters.
Another good reason why you must not try washing down items in your home is that they often get "balloony" inside the machine. So they may pop up inside. This is why it is highly recommended that you wash your goose down only in a commercial laundry shop. But even here, you must secure that the coverings are not too old so as not to bring home damaged bedding.
Don't be surprised with the smell of washing though. It is natural byproduct of all poultry components. This remains to be true with goose down but only when being washed. Smell will leave as soon as they are dried.
If you are to use dryer, more care must be observed. Most items easily burn so never leave them unattended. You can best avoid this by taking them out regularly to let the machine and goose down stuffs "breath" to prevent them from overheating. Watch out also of the number of items that you will dry.
Finally, goose down pillows don't allow trapped oils and perspiration inside escape and for water to pass through them. For the majority of cases, the best solution seems to be the use of quality protectors that must get washed regularly.
Once the life expectancy of your goose down item lapses, there is nothing left to do but to discard the whole thing. But don't be anxious you would still have to wait some 10 to 15 years before throwing your bedding away.
