Non profit groups make old cars profitable
from:
Making a car donation to a non profit organization has been a long standing practice dating back to 1978. The non profit Davis Memorial Foundation made the first ever can donation program. In its first year, Davis collected only five cars but this was enough to encourage other charities to take advantage of the new fundraising method.
Currently, about 300 non profit organization operate vehicle donations programs and items accepted range from cars, vans, boats, vans and even planes.
Non profit groups require the title of the car during the donation process. Donors that lose the document can approach the nearest office of the Department of Motor Vehicles to request for a replacement copy.
Why car donations are popular
Car donation services have become prevalent mostly because of the possible tax deductions donors can reap. In 2000, a total of 733,000 persons claimed $654m in deductions from making car donations out of the 129 million tax forms submitted to the Internal Services Revenue, according to records of the United States General Accounting Office.
The GEO also found that nearly 4,300 nin profit charities with annual turnover of about $100,000 run such services. The funds generated by the non profit groups are largely different from each other.

Calculating your tax benefit
A tax deduction from donating a car to a non profit group can be as high as $5,000 or even go as low $500 based on the condition of the vehicle. The Kelley Blue Book and the National Automobile Dealers Association have online references that can be used to calculate the book value of a donated car.
A "low value" car donation will qualify the donor to the minimum deduction and such transactions are finished immediately. If the non profit organization sells the car at an auction, the gross proceeds are normally used to fund the group's outreach programs.
Cars in satisfactory running condition can be used in different charity functions such as food deliveries or transportation for elderly or blind people or even as training tools for auto mechanic students.
