Car donation services have been around for a number of decades. These services allow an easy way to dispose of an ageing car and by donating it to charity. The donors will be able to avail of a lucrative tax deduction, while the charity can raise proceeds that normally do not come from cash donations.
Pioneered by the Davis Memorial Foundation in 1978, the service was launched to help the non-profit group become more competitive to the limited number of funds available in the US. Davies enjoyed minimal success in the program's first year, as only five cars were donated.
Other car donation services sprouted after a few years, as it presented a new source of money for charities. Today around 300 non-profit organization accept vehicle donations such as cars, vans, boats, vans and even plane.

The allure of car donation services
Car donation services have become popular primarily due to the possible tax deductions they can generate. Out of the 129 million tax forms filed in the 2000 fiscal year, a total of 733,000 claimed $654m in deductions from donations of used cars, which have a fair market value of a over $500, based on records of the United States General Accounting Office.
The GEO also noted that around 4,300 charities with annual revenue of nearly $100,000 have such services. The funds raised by charities vary largely from each other.
Donation values
Tax deduction can be as low as $500 or even go over $5,000 depending on the value of the. The Kelley Blue Book and the National Automobile Dealers Association have a set of guidelines available on the Internet to help donors calculate how much their old rides are really worth.
vehicles categorized as "low value" will result to a tax deduction of $500 and deals are finished immediately due to the low volume of paperwork. If a car is sold in an auction, the tax deduction will be based on the sale price.
Cars still running smoothly can be used to serve in various charity functions such as transporting food supplies, elderly or blind people or as training materials for auto mechanic students.
