Charities Make Old Cars New Again

from:

A car daily driven for the past 10 years easily shows its age either with a struggling engine or deteriorating paint. The older the car gets the lesser it become useful, as its performance is considerably below to what it was years ago. Various charities across the US are giving drivers a hassle free way of disposing their old rides through charity car donation.

Most charities accept donations ranging from cars, boats, RVs, SUVs and even planes even if they are not running. Donors are awarded a tax deduction that can be applied to their next income tax filing. Deductions are based on how the charity categorizes the donation or returns from a sale or an auction.

Pioneer program

The Davis Memorial Foundation introduced the first charity car donation drive in 1978. The group thought of the program to help it generate more funds, as the competition for donations in the US was strong during that period.

The program only collected five cars in its initial year but other charities became interested and eventually launched their own charity car donation drives. Charities soon affiliated themselves with private fundraising organizations to enhance their reach and attract more car donations.

Charity car donation drives became a new and reliable option to generate money for the various livelihood and assistance programs.

Calculating the value of your car donation

There are several ways to determine the value of a car donation. A charity can categorize a car in poor running condition, as "low value". The donor will avail of the minimum tax deduction of $500 and processing is quickly finished and required paperwork is minimal. The Internet sites of the National Automobile Dealers Association and the Kelley Blue Book have guides to help calculate the car's fair market value.

Many donated cars are sold in either in dealerships or auctions. The donor's tax deduction can also equate to how much the charity received from public bidding. Cars that can still be re-used for various functions of the charity such as transporting food, the elderly or disabled people can result to a tax deduction of as high as $5,000.
